Julio Iglesias, born Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva on September 23, 1943, in Madrid, Spain, is a Spanish singer, songwriter and former professional footballer. Before becoming a singer, he was a professional football goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla, but a serious car accident in 1963 ended his sports career and inspired him to focus on music during his recovery. Iglesias went on to sell more than 300 million records worldwide in fourteen languages, making him one of the bestselling solo artists in music history. It is estimated that during his career he has performed in more than 5000 concerts, for over 60 million people in five continents. In April 2013, Iglesias was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. One of his most beloved songs was “Un Canto a Galicia,” released in 1972. The emotional ballad was sung partly in Galician and paid tribute to the Spanish region of Galicia and its emigrants around the world. The single became an enormous international success, especially in Spain, Latin America, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The song reached No. 1 in Spain, Belgium, and several South American countries, while also becoming a Top 10 hit in the Netherlands and Germany. “Un Canto a Galicia” sold more than one million copies worldwide. Iglesias first gained fame after winning the Benidorm International Song Festival in 1968 with “La Vida Sigue Igual”. During the 1970s and 1980s he became a global superstar with hits such as “Manuela”, “Hey!”, “Quijote”, “Begin the Beguine”, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” with Willie Nelson, “Quiereme” (on our channel), “Amor” (on our channel), “El Amor (La Tendressa)” (on our channel), “De Nina A Mujer” (on our channel), “Quiereme Mucho” and “All of You” with Diana Ross.
