Texas 1981 Yolanda Herrera Cold Case Solved - Her Killer Was Never a Suspect In April 1981, 23-year-old Yolanda Herrera disappeared after leaving Johnny's Inn in Universal City, Texas. Two days later, children walking to school discovered her body in a field near East Aviation Drive. Investigators determined that she had been murdered and found evidence that she had been sexually assaulted. For more than four decades, the case remained unsolved. Investigators collected crucial biological evidence during Herrera's autopsy, including evidence from her fingernail scrapings and a semen sample, but early testing couldn't identify the person responsible. Years of investigation eliminated known suspects, leaving detectives with no name to pursue. Then, modern DNA technology reopened the case. In 2021, investigators were able to develop a male DNA profile from the preserved evidence, but it didn't match anyone in available databases. The limited amount of DNA made further testing difficult, so investigators had to wait for forensic technology to advance. The breakthrough finally came in 2025, when the evidence was submitted to Othram Laboratories. Advanced forensic testing and investigative genetic genealogy generated new leads that ultimately pointed investigators toward Kelly Lee Brower, a man who had lived in Universal City at the time of Herrera's murder but later moved to Arizona. Investigators obtained a reference DNA sample from Brower and compared it with the original evidence. According to authorities, the samples matched. Brower was arrested in Cottonwood, Arizona, on August 19, 2026, and authorities say he subsequently confessed during interviews with investigators. He faces a capital murder charge and is awaiting prosecution in Texas. What makes this case especially remarkable is that the man ultimately identified had apparently never been a suspect during the original investigation. After 45 years, a tiny piece of preserved evidence and advances in forensic genealogy finally gave investigators a name.
