The 7 levels of wealth in America, ranked by net worth with brand-new Federal Reserve data. To be exactly average you need $215,900. The top 1% starts at $16.5 million. And about 1 in 5 households is already a millionaire.
Using the Fed's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, we climb all 7 wealth levels, from underwater to the top 10%: what each level looks like, what it feels like, the one move that gets you to the next floor, and how long the climb really takes. Plus the level where money stops being the main problem. It's lower than you think. No judgment, wherever you are on the staircase.

Notes: Net worth figures are household medians/percentiles from the 2025 SCF, in 2025 dollars. Level ranges are rounded. Climb times assume starting at $0, investing every month, and a 7% average annual return, before taxes and inflation; real returns vary and markets can fall.
