Success Criterion 2.1.4 — Character Key Shortcuts (Level A). If your page uses single-character keyboard shortcuts, users must be able to turn them OFF or remap them to include a modifier key like Control or Alt. Why? Speech-input users: say the word "dim" into a text field and a global "d" shortcut hijacks the keystroke. Watch the QuickNotes conflict demo, then the fixed version with a working off switch and remap control.
What you'll learn:
What 2.1.4 requires, in plain words — off, remap, or focus-scoped
Why it exists: speech input, and anyone typing in your interface
Broken vs fixed: the QuickNotes shortcut conflict, recorded live
How to test: type the shortcut letters in a text field — nothing may fire
The one official technique: G217 — turn off or remap, findable and persistent
The failure to avoid: F99 — single-key shortcuts with no off switch
Your checklist, and the close of Guideline 2.1: Keyboard Accessible
