Hidden away on the north bank of the Humber lies Stone Creek — a fascinating and peaceful corner of East Yorkshire with a history that goes much deeper than its quiet appearance suggests.
In this PH Flightmode aerial video, we take to the skies over Stone Creek, near Sunk Island, capturing the waterways, surrounding countryside, Humber Estuary and the unique character of this lesser-known part of East Yorkshire.
But have you ever wondered why it is called Stone Creek?
The answer goes back to the area's historic connection with the Humber and the building of some of Holderness's most important churches. Stone was brought through the creek by water for use in churches at Patrington and elsewhere in Holderness, giving the creek its distinctive name.
Stone Creek later became increasingly important after the old harbour at Patrington Haven began to silt up in the mid-19th century. The creek became a working place for fishermen, who continued to operate from there until the 1950s. Today, small boats still use the creek, giving the area a fascinating connection with its maritime past.
From above, the landscape reveals details that are difficult to appreciate from ground level. The tidal creek, surrounding drainage channels, low-lying Holderness countryside and the vast Humber Estuary create a distinctive landscape shaped by both nature and centuries of human activity.
The area also has a fascinating military history. Nearby are the remains of a World War II heavy anti-aircraft gun site, originally established as Station J, which formed part of Britain's wartime defences.
Across the Humber, the industrial skyline of Immingham provides a striking contrast to the quiet landscape of Stone Creek — another reminder of the extraordinary mixture of countryside, wildlife, industry and maritime activity that surrounds the Humber Estuary.
This aerial footage gives you a chance to see Stone Creek from a perspective that most visitors never get.
