Pastor Earl Wallace takes Jesus’ description of the faithful and wise servant and focuses on three qualities he believes should characterize our lives: we need to be faithful, wise, and timely. Faithfulness starts with recognizing who we serve. Pastor Earl describes a servant as someone who willingly gives himself to the will of another. For Christians, that means submitting our plans, abilities, and desires to Christ and asking God to work in us so we can actually do what He’s calling us to do. But faithfulness also requires wisdom. Pastor Earl warns against becoming “wise in our own eyes.” Biblical wisdom isn’t simply knowing a lot or having impressive credentials. It’s knowing how and when to apply what God has taught us, while remaining humble enough to depend on Him. Then there’s something we might overlook: timing. Pastor Earl points to the sons of Issachar, who “understood the times” and knew what Israel should do. His point is that God’s servants need to understand not only what’s right, but what God is calling them to do in the moment they’re living in. The challenge is to ask ourselves: Am I faithful to what God has given me, wise enough to depend on Him, and paying enough attention to recognize what He’s asking me to do right now?
