Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon implies that Oryx, The Taken King, isn't truly dead. This Dungeon's lore tells us about a team of Hidden agents who investigated the remains of the hive God and discovered that he's not truly dead in every sense. His body is still growing in size and his mind can still experience memories and stimulus, even though he can't react to them. He's also got massive concentrations of Darkness and Taken energies.
