Pharmacology, what does it mean?
Drugs and the body and what happens between.
A drug can change what the body will do,
A medicine treats disease in you.
Every medication may come with three names,
Chemical, generic, brand-name games.
Chemical tells what the structure will be,
Generic is standard, brand’s company!
What is it? Where does it go?
How does it work? How fast or slow?
Check the drug, the dose, the route,
Know what pharmacology’s all about!
Pain or infection, numb that tooth,
Check the history, check it twice for truth!
Name, dose, route, and allergy,
Safe medication dentistry!
Oral means swallow, digestive-track ride,
Sublingual goes underneath the tongue to hide.
Buccal sits between the cheek and gum,
Topical works where it’s placed upon.
Inhalation travels in with a breath,
Transdermal patches release with depth.
I.M goes muscle, sub-Q under skin,
I.V hits the bloodstream quick to begin!
What is it? Where does it go?
How does it work? How fast or slow?

Name, dose, route, and allergy,
Safe medication dentistry!
Absorb it!
Distribute it!
Metabolize it!
Eliminate it!
From the moment that the medicine gets in,
The body gets to work on what you’ve given.
And when the liver changes chemistry?
That stage is called metabolism, easy!
Anesthetic blocks the pain signal through,
Analgesic helps when pain bothers you.
N.SAIDs tackle pain and swelling too,
Acetaminophen treats pain and fever for you.
Antibiotics fight bacteria instead,
Amoxicillin is one you’ll often have read.
Check those allergies before it begins,
And finish the course even when symptoms dim!

Name it, route it, know what it’ll do,
Check the patient’s history too!
Pain, infection, anesthesia-three,
Welcome to pharmacology!
Chemical! Generic! Brand!
Dose and route, understand!
