Your toast lands butter side down. Your bus leaves without you. And over your head, a number: your luck. Zero.
Then one night it starts to climb. A thousand. Infinite. Every light turns green. Every ticket wins. A plane lands on a motorway and nobody spills a drink. But luck isn't made. It's moved. And somebody has been paying for all of yours, starting with your best friend, and your mum.

The real science:
• Richard Wiseman (University of Hertfordshire) asked people to count the photographs in a newspaper. Unlucky people took about two minutes; lucky people took seconds, because they noticed the message on page two saying there were 43 (The Luck Factor, 2003)
• The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million
• Your lifetime odds of being struck by lightning are about 1 in 15,300 (NOAA)
If you had infinite luck, and you knew who was paying for it, how long would you keep it? Tell me in the comments.
