Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around nine miles north, and slightly east, of Derby is the town of Ripley. Geographically, Ripley is situated at the heart of the Amber Valley - a district of Derbyshire with borough status, named after the River Amber, a tributary of the River Derwent. The town serves as its administrative centre. In 1251 a market charter was granted to Ripley by Henry III. Historic industries associated with the town include coal mining, ironworking and brickmaking. In 1790 manufacturing firm The Butterley Company was founded here, and remained in the town until 2009 when they went into administration. At the northern end of the town centre is the Parish Church of All Saints. This dates from 1821, and was built by the aforementioned manufacturing firm The Butterley Company. In 1856 a railway station opened in Ripley courtesy of the Midland Railway. This was situated on two branch lines, connecting it to Derby and Heanor, among other destinations. The station closed to passengers in 1930. Today, public transport to Ripley consists of direct buses from Derby, Nottingham, Heanor, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Alfreton and various other nearby locations. Famous people from Ripley include Barnes Wallace, inventor of the bouncing bomb used by the Royal Air Force in Operation Chastise in 1943, commonly known as the Dambusters Raid. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
