What if you booked "the Shining hotel," flew all the way there, and discovered the building you wanted was in a completely different state? The Overlook isn't one building. Stephen King's story started at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. The famous exterior shots are Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, Oregon. The Ahwahnee in Yosemite inspired the interior design, and the interiors themselves were built as sets at Elstree Studios in England. The opening drive was filmed mostly over Glacier National Park, Montana. We untangle which place is which, what you'll actually recognise, and which one belongs on your trip. 🗺️ Every Shining location on one map: https://filmingmap.com/movie/the-shining CHAPTERS 0:00 The hotel you might accidentally book 1:06 One fictional hotel, several real addresses 2:03 Timberline Lodge, Oregon: the Overlook exterior 4:11 The Stanley Hotel, Colorado: where the story began 6:37 The Ahwahnee, Yosemite: the interiors connection 8:24 Elstree Studios, England: the Overlook you can't check into 11:09 Glacier National Park, Montana: the opening drive 12:55 Which trip should you start with?
