LYRICS We thought we'd have a party, Just a little Halloween, Put some pumpkins on the doorstep, Make the living room a scene. We sent word around the neighborhood, Said, "Come by after eight," Set the drinks out on the table And left open the front gate. Halloween at our house, Come and stay awhile, There's a candle in the window And a pumpkin with a smile. We thought we'd see the neighbors, Maybe friends from down the street— We didn't know exactly who Was coming by to eat. At eight o'clock a witch arrived, With a broom beneath her arm, Then a ghost came through the doorway With a most peculiar charm. Two skeletons came dancing in, A mummy followed through, We looked at one another— There wasn't much to do. Halloween at our house, Now the place was getting full, There were goblins in the kitchen, And a werewolf by the stool. A creature took the easy chair, A ghost turned down the light, Our little neighborhood affair Had changed a bit tonight. Then someone rang the doorbell, And the whole room turned to stare, A gentleman in evening clothes Was calmly standing there. He introduced himself as Dracula, Then smiled and stepped inside, We offered him a cocktail— He politely said, "I'll bide." The witch was in the kitchen, The mummy found the punch, The werewolf ate the sandwiches And asked what else was lunch. Then Dracula moved closer, Said, "This gathering is first-rate," We'd bitten off more than we'd planned— Then he bit my dinner date. Halloween at our house, Things had gotten out of hand, There were footprints on the ceiling, And a monster with the band. The neighbors weren't the neighbors That we thought we'd asked to call, But judging by the crowded room, They'd heard about us all. By midnight ghosts were dancing, Skeletons had formed a line, The mummy found the record player, Dracula found the wine. We'd planned a quiet evening, Just some neighbors dropping by— Instead we had the creatures Of the earth, the grave and sky. Halloween at our house, What a night it's turned out to be, Every ghoul in the neighborhood Found our hospitality. Next October we'll be quieter, That's the promise that we made— No invitations, no big party, Just the porch light and some shade. Then somebody rang the bell again... #HolidayJazzSongs #HalloweenAtOurHouse #Jazz
