Can you solve this logarithmic equation without getting trapped by the nested radical?
log₉(√(3√x)) = 1/2
At first glance, this looks like a logarithm-and-radical problem that requires several complicated steps. But there is a much cleaner transformation hiding in plain sight.
In this video, we solve the equation step by step and reveal why the 1/2 on the right-hand side is the key to simplifying the entire problem.
We will transform the logarithmic equation into exponential form:
√(3√x) = 9^(1/2)
Then simplify:
√(3√x) = 3
From there, the nested radical becomes much easier to handle, leading to the exact real solution:
x = 9
We will also check the logarithmic domain, verify the radical restriction, and substitute the final answer back into the original equation.
Challenge: Before watching the complete solution, pause the video and try to find x yourself.
Did you immediately notice that 9^(1/2) = 3, or did you start manipulating the radicals first?
