In 1930 a quiet 24-year-old in Vienna wrote a sentence of arithmetic that says, in effect, "this sentence cannot be proved". If mathematics could prove it, mathematics would be proving something false. So it can't, which makes it true. With that idea, Kurt Gödel ended David Hilbert's dream of a complete, provably safe mathematics. This is the story of the boy his family called Mister Why, Russell's barber paradox, the quiet remark in Königsberg that only von Neumann understood, the proof step by step (turning formulas into numbers with primes, and making arithmetic talk about itself), the second incompleteness theorem, what Gödel did NOT prove, the escape across Siberia, the daily walks with Einstein, a universe where you can travel back in time, the citizenship hearing, and his tragic end. The symbol codes used on screen are simplified for illustration. Quotes from Einstein, Morgenstern and Frege are as reported in later accounts, and the citizenship-hearing story comes from Morgenstern's notes. Document excerpts are labelled "paraphrased", "translated" or "summary" where they are not quoted word for word. SOURCES • K.
