TRUE STORY This story is about Redoine Faid: The French Gangster Who Escaped Prison Rédoine Faïd is a notorious French criminal who became famous for his daring prison escapes. He was involved in armed robberies and was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in a failed robbery in 2010 that led to the death of a police officer. In April 2013, he escaped from a prison in northern France after taking prison guards hostage and using explosives to break out. He remained on the run for about six weeks before police captured him and returned him to prison. His criminal career and repeated escapes made him one of France’s most notorious fugitives. On 1 July 2018, Faïd made headlines again when armed accomplices helped him escape from Réau Prison near Paris using a helicopter. He was visiting a family member when the rescue team arrived and freed him in a dramatic operation that lasted only a few minutes. The helicopter was later abandoned, and a nationwide manhunt began. After nearly three months on the run, French police arrested him in October 2018 in Creil, the town where he grew up. His extraordinary escapes shocked France and raised serious questions about prison security.
