Does a swaying building during an earthquake
scare you? That sway might actually be what
saves it.
We assume the stronger the building, the
safer it is. In earthquake engineering,
that assumption is wrong.
The 1985 Mexico City earthquake, two
buildings side by side in the same area.
One collapsed. One stood. The difference
was only in the design.
Base Isolation, special rubber-steel
isolators placed between the ground and
the building. When the earth shakes, these
isolators absorb a large portion of the
movement before it reaches the structure.
Tuned Mass Damper, a massive weight
suspended inside tall buildings that moves
in the opposite direction to the building's
sway, reducing oscillation and keeping
the structure stable.
Earthquake-resistant design does not aim
to stop a building from moving. It aims
to manage the earthquake's energy so the
building survives without catastrophic
damage.
Next time you see a building sway in an
earthquake, look again. It might not be
swaying because it is weak. It might be
swaying because it was designed to survive.
