Archaeologists in England Unearthed One of the Most Complete Iron Age War Trumpets Ever Found

An Iron Age carnyx was unearthed in Norfolk. Found during a pre-construction excavation in summer 2025, the near-complete war trumpet is one of only three known in Britain and one of the most complete found in Europe—not a confirmed world-record find. Its intact bell, mouthpiece, and ears survived alongside a boar-head battle standard, five shield bosses, parts of another carnyx, and an unidentified iron object. The hoard was lifted inside a soil block and examined with X-rays and CT scans before conservation. Historic England and museum partners are researching the discovery, while the Treasure Act 1996 leaves its future to a coroner.
