In our recent podcast with Fertility and IVF Specialist Dr. Mandeep Kaur, she shared some extremely important insights related to women’s reproductive health. Dr. Mandeep discussed a serious emergency case where a patient came to her with severe abdominal pain and was literally unable to sit still due to the intensity of the pain—the patient was jumping on the bed because of discomfort. This condition is known as Ovarian Torsion. In ovarian torsion, the ovary twists around the ligaments that support it, leading to a sudden severe lower abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Patients cannot sit properly due to the unbearable pain, and immediate medical attention is crucial, otherwise the ovary can be damaged permanently. She also highlighted that if someone experiences unusually high pain during periods—pain that is much more intense than before, especially sharp pain in the lower abdomen, then it should not be ignored. This could be a sign of serious conditions like Endometriosis. Regarding Endometriosis, Dr. Mandeep explained that even after surgery, the problem may not be fully solved and has a high chance of recurring. In such cases, timely IVF treatment is recommended to improve the chances of pregnancy before the condition worsens. Dr. Mandeep also clarified the differences between PCOD and Ovarian Cysts, explaining that both have separate symptoms and treatment approaches. She discussed what type of cyst is considered harmful (disease-related cyst) and when it becomes a reason for concern. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of Ultrasound—how regular ultrasound scans help in early diagnosis of ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and PCOD, and can prevent severe complications when treated on time.
