After the Unethical reaction, the top comment on that video — and four more underneath it — told me to go and watch Faouzia sing "Don't Ever Leave Me" live at the GRAMMY Museum. You were right. She is the empress of heartbreak, and I think I can finally explain why that works. Here is the thing I actually came here to tell you. We talk about technique as though it is the opposite of emotion — as though a singer can be too perfect to move you. I think it is the other way round. Faouzia's technique is so secure that you never once brace for a bad note. You are never pulled out of the song to think "ooh, she was a bit flat there". And because you are never pulled out, you can fully lose yourself in the emotional journey. That is what her control is FOR. I'm Rachel Walker Mason — a Grammy voting member, Billboard-charting songwriter and Estill-qualified vocal producer — and I see music in colour. I have actually been inside that room. I'm a Grammy member, so I have been to the GRAMMY Museum and stood in that beautiful little theatre, and I know how small it is. Sitting there while someone sings like that, with one guitarist and nothing else — no band, no production, nowhere to hide — must have been extraordinary. A note on the performance: what she sings at the GRAMMY Museum is a medley. "Don't Ever Leave Me" runs into a cover of YEBBA's "My Mind" and back out again, which the Museum's own upload doesn't mention in its title.
