HSRP, VRRP, and VPC are networking technologies used to improve gateway redundancy and switch connectivity. In simple terms, HSRP and VRRP provide a backup default gateway, while VPC lets two switches act like one logical switch for downstream devices.
HSRP
HSRP stands for Hot Standby Router Protocol. It is a Cisco gateway-redundancy protocol where one device is active and another is standby, so if the active device fails, the standby takes over using the same virtual IP and virtual MAC behavior.
VRRP
VRRP stands for Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol. It works similarly to HSRP, but it is an open standard rather than Cisco-specific, and it also uses a virtual IP with one router acting as master/active and others as backups.
VPC
VPC stands for Virtual Port Channel. It allows two separate switches to present themselves as one logical port-channel to a downstream device, which improves redundancy and can also support active-active forwarding.
How they work together
In a VPC setup, HSRP or VRRP is often used for the default gateway on VLAN interfaces. From the control-plane point of view, one device is still active and the other standby, but from the data-plane point of view, both VPC peers can forward traffic, which improves efficiency and resilience.
