In 2021, I set out on another bicycle journey through Italy, this time travelling from the northern mainland, through the rolling hills of Tuscany, and eventually crossing to the stunning island of Sardinia. The route on the mainland took me through a remarkable variety of landscapes and towns: from the historic streets of Pavia and Genoa, to the beautiful coastal roads of Rapallo and Framura. Moving inland, I experienced the artistic treasures of Lucca, Siena, and the heart of the Tuscan countryside, challenge by a memorable 100km ride. From Piombino, the journey continued across the sea to Sardinia. The island provided a completely different atmosphere, starting in Olbia and winding through Nuoro, the famed mural-lined streets of Orgosolo, and the majestic coast of Cala Gonone. Continuing south, I pedaled through Lanusei and Tertenia, eventually reaching the vibrant capital, Cagliari. This journey was a fascinating contrast between Italy's cultural mainstays, the rural heartland, and the rugged Mediterranean beauty of Sardinia. Along the way there were mountain roads, medieval towns, unique island landscapes, and long stretches of unforgettable coastline. Some of the highlights included exploring the coastal majesty of Genoa, cycling the ancient walls of Lucca, reaching the iconic Piazza del Campo in Siena, and experiencing the unique culture and wild beauty of inner Sardinia. Unlike a conventional holiday, travelling by bicycle gives a very different perspective. Distances are covered slowly, the landscape changes gradually, and towns and villages become part of the experience rather than simply places to pass through. This video photo slideshow is based on my travel diary from the 2021 journey.
