After 1998, the standards of China and Brazil began to decline. Lang Ping left, and Brazilian players grew older. From a viewer’s standpoint, the matches in 1999–2000 felt rather dull. Yet Cuba and Russia sustained the highest level in volleyball history; if moved to the present, these two teams could still overcome any opponent. This series is mainly for veteran volleyball fans to recall the past. I do not plan to post any 2000 games at first. Cuba, Russia, and South Korea are the only teams I suggest watching. South Korea, in particular, reached its peak in 1999–2000 with all players at 170–78 height. Post-Match Commentary : Japan’s Olympic bid collapsed and their head coach left, so the assistant coach took charge for the World Grand Prix. The 2000 performance was historically weak, echoing the 1997 difficulties. Although Tajimi and Eto faced middle blockers no longer present, this did not resolve Japan’s long-standing weakness in the middle position. This was the final round, where teams ranked fifth through eighth in the preliminary stage competed for those same positions. The USA held fifth place and Japan eighth. Japan posted a disappointing 0–9 record in the preliminary round. Without their head coach and unable to qualify for the Olympics, the tournament felt less meaningful to Japan—more like a chance to travel than a contest. Another USA legend, #15 Logan Tom (19, 1.84m), had just graduated from university and joined the national team as a first-year member. She was already part of the lineup. Since 1999, #13 Tara Cross-Battle (32, 1.8m) and #2 Danielle Scott (28, 1.88m) had rejoined the team, prepared for the Olympics. In the first set, both Japan and the USA made errors, but Japan’s were more costly, and they could not block any American attacks.
