Is Latpanchar only for bird lovers? I had the wrong idea.
For the longest time, I believed Latpanchar was just a paradise for bird watchers — a place where people came with telephoto lenses and tripods, quietly waiting to hear the chirping of rare Himalayan birds. I thought, “There’s probably not much else for an average traveller like me.”
But I was wrong. Deeply wrong.
In this video, I take you on a journey to Latpanchar, a serene hill village in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. As I explored the area, my perspective changed completely.
We visited the historic Latkothi ( Latpanchar Beat Forest Rest House )— a 100-year-old British-era forest rest house (Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary) built during the time of the cinchona plantations. Then we made our way to the stunning Ahldara View Point, about 10 kilometers away, where the view stretches across Gangtok, Kalimpong, Tinchule, and more on a clear day.
But beyond the nature and heritage, it was the hospitality of the locals, the unexpected warmth — even a song from a hotel owner — that made Latpanchar truly unforgettable.
This video is not just a travel vlog — it's a personal realization. That sometimes, the places we underestimate can touch our hearts the most.
