In 1851 Massachusetts started digging a railroad tunnel through Hoosac Mountain to win the trade of the American West. It took 24 years, killed at least 135 men, and cost somewhere between $14 and $21 million, depending on who's counting. By the time trains ran through it, the trade war it was built for was already lost.
And yet the Hoosac Tunnel may be one of the most productive holes ever dug in America. This episode covers how compressed-air drills, nitroglycerin made safe by freezing, electric firing and precision surveying down a 1,028-foot shaft finally beat the mountain. We also check four numbers that get repeated about this tunnel (the death toll, the cost, the "9/16 of an inch" and the date of the 1867 disaster) against the oldest sources we could find.
