"Volume 1" is an album that surprises right from the cover: what does that tiny knight armed with shield and sword who has just pierced an enormous black dragon to save the Kingdom that we can see in the background on the back of the album have to do with it?
Nothing, absolutely nothing unless that "S" on the shield stands for Savage, unlikely champion in defense of Psychedelic Rock!
Produced by Robert Savage himself, alias Bobby Arlin (former guitarist of The Hook and who replaced Bill Rinehart in The Leaves) in collaboration with Norm Ratner and recorded in the Sound City studios in California, the aforementioned album will prove to be the first and last of an American trio with an extravagant name: The Adventures Of Robert Savage.
The album opens with "Beaver Baby", where, in addition to some very catchy guitars, we can appreciate the incredible high notes of an unknown female voice (which in fact does not appear in the credits): the song takes us back to flower-power atmospheres and especially in the choirs contain sounds that bring to mind those of the musical "Hair"; "Milk Run" is very lively and here too the leader works hard for the success of the piece, especially in the long and whirlwind final solo, a great demonstration of skill and technique.
Nice sound carpet spread by the rhythm section in the following "Don't Run and Hide", which is a little more sedate than the previous two tracks and in which the blond Don Parish's bass turns are particularly effective.
With "A Hard One" the black soul of the group comes out and the piano accompaniment gives that something extra to the already excellent piece.
Tommy Richards indulges himself with cymbals and rolls in "7 Days Drunk", which closes Side A of the vinyl with all the overwhelming verve of the notes that compose it.
A dramatic beginning announces the longest song of the lot, namely the complex "Save Us from the Cyclops", which, with its beautiful refrain and its solo parts, allows us once again to appreciate the compositional qualities of the band .
The following "Amy" sees excellent work on the bass by Don Parish and a really acidic guitar in the end; by closing your eyes, the mental trip is guaranteed.
With "Lonely World" we find ourselves faced with what can be defined as the ballad of the album, although the chorus is quite energetic, especially when compared to the quiet and delicate initial sounds: the song takes advantage of this contrast, resulting in one of the best on the album .
The last song (Road Apples) is an engaging instrumental jam with a bluesy flow which sees in the second half a rather long and articulated guitar dialogue by the charismatic leader: here too an excellent choral performance by the band.
The proposal of the project called The Adventures Of Robert Savage is strongly indebted to the typical sounds of another great trio, the immortal The Jimi Hendrix Experience; this is evident in every single guitar note, in the solos, even in the style of the vocals which make us understand how much influence Hendrix had on Savage/Arlin ... but this does not go to the detriment of the quality of the compositions, an excellent example of psychedelic rock roaring from the early '70s, which still enchants with its beauty today: it's a shame there wasn't a sequel.
