30 Things Britain Drank That Are Gone Forever

Thirty drinks from British life between the 1940s and the 1990s, in roughly the order we met them: at the infant welfare clinic, at the school tuck shop, at the pictures, by the kettle, on the sideboard and, last of all, in bed with a temperature. Every one has a date against it. Covered in full: National Dried Milk, welfare orange juice, rose hip syrup, sterilised milk in the tall bottle, Five Pints, Jubbly, Panda Pops, Creamola Foam, Top Deck, Cydrax, Peardrax, Idris, Kia-Ora at the cinema, Quosh, SodaStream and its old syrups, Tab, Brooke Bond Dividend and its stamps, Lyons Quick Brew, Fry's Cocoa, the Maxpax cup on the train, Pomagne, Pony, British sherry, Blue Nun, Tizer, Ribena, Robinsons, Irn-Bru, Lilt, and Lucozade in its yellow cellophane. Some of these went with their names. Others are still on the shelf under the same name with a different drink inside, and one drink carries on under a new name. Each is described as the record shows it, with the date it went or the date it changed. Every entry was checked against company histories, trade press, museum collections, Hansard and contemporary newspaper coverage. Where popular memory and the documented record disagree, the narration says so. The welfare orange juice ended in 1971, five years before the dried milk. British sherry lost its name on 1 January 1996. Irn-Bru went on sale under that spelling in 1948.
