Chapter 1 Dinin Do’Urden returns to Menzoberranzan after time spent at the Academy. He emerges into the vast underground city and sees its scale: glowing faerie fire, giant stalactites, spider-themed architecture, and the towering pillar Narbondel. The rigid, brutal hierarchy of drow society and the constant scheming of the noble houses are established. Dinin rides through the city toward House Do’Urden, observing the power and danger of Menzoberranzan. Chapter 2 Dinin arrives at the fortified compound of House Do’Urden. He reports to Matron Malice in the grand chamber; Briza is present and watchful. Matron Malice reveals her ambition to rise in the ranks of the noble houses. Preparations begin for a major move against a higher-ranking house (House DeVir). Zaknafein, the house weapons master, is prepared and sent into action as the key instrument of the coming attack.
