A man reads this sentence and hears every word spoken aloud in his head. Another man reads the same sentence, and hears nothing at all. Neither one knew, until recently, that the other kind of mind existed. For decades, psychologist Russell Hurlburt gave people a small beeper that went off at random moments during the day. The moment it beeped, they had to write down exactly what was in their mind, right then. Some heard full sentences, word for word. Others heard nothing — no narrator, no voice, just images, pressure, a sense of knowing without words. In 2024, researchers gave that silence a name: anendophasia, the complete absence of inner speech. And they found it wasn't harmless. People with little or no inner voice performed worse on verbal memory tasks and struggled more with simple rhyme judgments than people with a strong inner monologue. Most of them had spent their entire lives assuming "hearing your thoughts" was just a figure of speech. What this covers: How a random beeper caught people's minds mid-thought, thousands of times The moment researchers realized "inner voice" isn't universal Why people with no inner voice score lower on certain memory tasks What happens at the opposite end, when the inner voice won't stop Why almost nobody had ever compared notes on this, until now The one question worth asking about your own mind You've spent your whole life assuming your mind works like everyone else's. It doesn't. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ I make these alone, please like this video if you have the time. If not, no problem. I will see you in the next one.
