Scoliosis is broken down into many categories. One of those categories is moderate scoliosis. Moderate scoliosis is the most common initial diagnosis of scoliosis and describes the severity of the spine’s curve. How is the severity of scoliosis measured? A cobb angle is used to measure the magnitude of the scoliosis by finding the most tilted vertebrae and comparing it to the most tilted vertebrae above or below and measuring that angle. Curves that range from 25 to 40 degrees are considered to be moderate scoliosis. A change in posture, an unevenness in the shoulders and in the hips, headaches, digestive issues, and pain along the spine could be symptoms of moderate scoliosis. Dr. Nalda does not recommend waiting several months to see if the moderate scoliosis will progress after initial diagnosis. For children, many doctors will either watch the curve to see if it progresses, or recommend a brace that is intended to hold the curve where it is and keep it from becoming severe scoliosis. For adults, many doctors will only treat the symptoms. Dr. Nalda has a different approach, called the functional approach. This approach works to restore function back to the spine to slow or even stop progression. This approach also tries to reduce the size of the curve in the spine.
