Designed over video calls during a pandemic, built to fit a site that was never meant to grow: here's the automated warehouse System Logistics delivered for Nordic Sugar, part of the Nordzucker group, at its Örtofta plant in Sweden. Commissioned in 2020 and operational since 2021, the facility holds up to 11,696 pallet locations through a high-density storage system. Its standout feature is an M-shaped SVL loop made up of 10 monorail vehicles, engineered to fit the existing building layout and ensure a continuous, uninterrupted pallet flow between production, storage and shipping across multiple buildings - all without structural expansion. The warehouse is heated to prevent the liquid sugar from crystallising, making it a distinctive case of energy efficiency in an extremely cold environment. Pallets are loaded directly onto trucks with no ground prestaging, cutting waiting times, while the fully automated flow helps Nordic Sugar manage seasonal production peaks such as the annual "beet campaign" with far less reliance on manual handling.
