Real Madrid's €1.4 Billion Stadium Hasn't Gone to Plan

Real Madrid spent €1.4 billion rebuilding the Santiago Bernabéu so it could hide its own pitch and turn into a concert venue overnight. Two years later, it has barely been allowed to host a concert. This is how the most advanced stadium in football ran into the one problem it couldn't engineer away: the neighbours. In this video we go inside the new Bernabéu's retractable pitch: six 1,500-tonne trays lowered 30 metres underground into a greenhouse with grow lights, CO2 feeding and cameras that watch the grass. We cover how the budget went from €575 million to €1.4 billion, the €1.17 billion borrowed through JP Morgan with loans running to 2049, and the Sixth Street deal that sold 30% of the stadium's new business income for 20 years. Then the concerts: Taylor Swift, 80 decibels in streets with a 53-decibel limit, the Chamartín residents who fought back, and the court cases that followed, from the parking ruling to the Supreme Court and the NFL game that ended up in court too. Finally, the numbers: stadium income has more than doubled to €363 million and Real Madrid earned a record €1.22 billion, so has the Bernabéu actually failed? Real Madrid solved every hard problem and underestimated the easy one. Should a club be allowed to turn its stadium into a concert venue in the middle of a neighbourhood, or should the neighbours win this one? Tell me what you think in the comments.
