Do Black Books Need Non-Black Readers to Succeed?

Can Black books become commercially successful with primarily Black readers—or does the publishing industry still expect them to attract a large non-Black audience before treating them as important? In this Honey & Prose discussion, we’re talking about crossover appeal, publishing expectations and what happens when Black books are marketed as though Black readers alone could never be enough. Do Black authors have to make their stories accessible, comfortable or “relatable” to non-Black audiences to receive major promotion, bestseller recognition and adaptation opportunities? Non-Black readers discovering and supporting Black books can be a wonderful thing. The concern is what happens when their attention becomes the standard used to determine whether a Black story has value. We’re also examining the role Black readers play in supporting Black authors—and whether the industry gives us the visibility, access and marketing necessary to find those books in the first place. Book Nook Crew, what do you think? Can Black readers create enough commercial success for Black books, or does the publishing industry still require outside validation before it fully invests in them? Welcome back to Honey & Prose, where my TBR is Black on purpose. Drink something warm, pick up something good, and I’ll see you in the next chapter. #BlackBooks #BlackAuthors #BookTube -------------------------------------------- 🍯 Welcome to Honey & Prose At Honey & Prose, we believe stories are meant to be felt, not just finished. Hey Book Nook Crew! I’m Denise, and Honey & Prose is where we talk about stories, softness, and the emotional experience of reading. I believe the best books aren’t the ones you finish the fastest. They’re the ones that linger. The ones that change how you see the world, make you question everything, keep you thinking long after you’ve turned the last page, or introduce you to characters you never quite get over. If you’ve ever finished a book and immediately needed someone to talk to about it… You’re in the right place. Around here you’ll find thoughtful book recommendations, honest reviews, reading vlogs, book discussions, reading wrap-ups, TBRs, cozy conversations, and my signature series, Page Turners for Popcorn Lovers, where we match your favorite movies with books you’ll love just as much. Whether you’re looking for literary fiction, romance, thrillers, fantasy, horror, historical fiction, or stories by incredible Black authors, Honey & Prose is a place where every reader is welcome. ⸻ News Theme by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
