Why Belgium and the Netherlands Had to Move Their Border

Along the Meuse River between Belgium and the Netherlands, the international border once crossed dry land instead of following the water. Pieces of Belgian territory were attached to the Dutch bank, while Dutch territory could only be reached over land through Belgium. The problem began after a joint engineering project reshaped this stretch of the Meuse to improve navigation. The river and the old cadastral border no longer matched, creating unusual territorial enclaves, complicating policing and jurisdiction, and even affecting a major navigation lock.
