One of the best ways to make your homebrewed world and storylines seem real to your players is to base its rules on the same common sense rules we apply in our every day lives. I talk about five basic rules that most of use to navigate the real world and show how these can be applied to a fictional RPG world. Just as we all assume that the real world exists independently of our thinking about it, so too does the world created by the GM. We also expect the world created by that GM to be consistent, just as we do the real world. We also know that the world existed before us and will continue on after we are gone. Your homebrewed world should reflect this rule by having a shared history among your NPC's and monsters, and have creatures react in ways that reflects that history and the awareness of it. We feel that we have free will for our actions, and so should the players in your game. And so too should the NPC's and creatures, so long as their actions reflect reasonable motives. As we interact with the sentient creatures of a D&D world, we expect our actions to have an impact on theirs, and we should see them acting in ways that reflect their belief in their own impact. I use examples from my sample encounter with Kurok the orc and his campaign to destroy the village of Rodenburr through a series of night raids to demonstrate the application of these rules. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Here are some of the products you can use to start playing D&D and create your own homebrewed campaign.
