During this countryside day, I start harvesting taro by hand, digging heavy purple roots that are starchy, soft, and sweet. The work is slow and tiring — root after root until the baskets are full — then I carry the harvest home. Back from the garden, I boil the fresh taro and we share a hot meal before the market. Then I go to market sell the taro for the village neighbors, and the baskets empty in a busy countryside exchange.
