Everyone thinks Abu Simbel was built to survive the ages. But in the 1960s, it nearly drowned. In this video, we tell the story of the rescue of Abu Simbel — how UNESCO and Egyptian engineers cut an entire 3,000-year-old temple into more than a thousand numbered blocks and reassembled it 65 meters higher, away from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. But the real miracle isn't the move — it's the trick of light. For over 3,000 years, twice a year, the sun has travelled more than 60 meters through the temple's corridor to illuminate three of the four gods seated in the sanctuary. The fourth, Ptah, god of the underworld, stays in shadow — by design. Ancient Egyptian architects calculated that angle with zero modern instruments. If you could witness one ancient phenomenon in person, would it be this exact sunrise?
