And why was Ryuichi Sakamoto, the central composer, originally cast as a military officer in the film but then assigned by the director to complete the epic soundtrack within seven days? Winning nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, "The Last Emperor," directed by Italian maestro Bernardo Bertolucci, depicts the grandeur and intricacies of the Forbidden City, narrating the history of the Qing Dynasty's puppet emperor, Pu Yi. The film delves into the inner worlds of various court figures who are trapped and isolated. Initially, Ryuichi Sakamoto was only supposed to act in the film. However, when the crew arrived in Changchun for filming, Bertolucci unexpectedly asked Sakamoto to compose music for the coronation ceremony scene. Despite having access to only an old, dilapidated piano on location, Sakamoto fulfilled the task. Little did he know that it wouldn't end there.
