Why would RadioShack, after 45 years of its own house-brand stereos, mark them down in 1999 just to clear the shelf? The house brand was not beaten by a better receiver. The store gave that shelf away.
From the Minimus-7 speaker at $49.95 to the STA-2500 receiver, Realistic filled the stereo wall of more than 7,000 RadioShack outlets. Then Tandy stopped making its own audio and signed RCA as the only audio and video brand in its stores. In 1991 Bernie Appel, known as Mr. RadioShack, had insisted house brands were still the main business.
What this video covers:
1954 - Harman Kardon pitches a private label called Realist
1979 - Stereo Review calls the Minimus-7 a bargain
1993 - Tandy decides to stop making things, and Appel retires
1997 - The Sprint Store opens inside RadioShack
1999 - The RCA deal and the markdowns on the house stereos
2015 - Bankruptcy, with phones at the center of the store
If a Minimus-7 or a Realistic receiver came home with you from the mall, tell us which one and where it ended up. Subscribe for more histories of the stereo gear that filled American living rooms. The stereo never lost to a rival brand; it lost its shelf to a phone counter.
