What does it actually mean to be the strongest? Gege Akutami’s characters represent completely different answers to power, isolation, and purpose. In most shōnen series, strength is the goal. However in Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s the problem. This video essay explores how Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and Ryomen Sukuna each confront the same unavoidable truth: when you rise above everyone else, you lose the ability to stand beside them.
Gojo tries to carry the world. Geto tries to remake it. Sukuna rejects it entirely. But Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t frame strength as something to admire and instead treats it as something that separates, distorts, and ultimately dehumanises those who attain the unattainable. The strongest individuals in this story are powerful anomalies incompatible with the world around them. From the breaking point of Gojo and Geto’s bond, to the chaos introduced by Toji Fushiguro, to the ideological extremes embodied by Sukuna, this deep dive unpacks how the series dismantles the core fantasy of shōnen itself: that power brings connection, purpose, or meaning. Instead, it asks something far more uncomfortable: if strength isolates you from humanity… is it really a gift? And if the world depends on individuals like Gojo to survive… what happens when they’re gone? This essay explores whether Jujutsu Kaisen offers a way forward… or simply exposes the problem.
