He quickly discovers, however, that the committee members are not particularly interested in being managed according to Gildersleeve’s plans. Different opinions, competing priorities, and strong personalities turn what he imagined would be an orderly civic assignment into an exhausting exercise in diplomacy. Determined to maintain control, Gildy becomes increasingly formal and authoritative, which only creates more resistance. His attempts to satisfy everyone while preserving his own dignity lead to confusion both at the meeting and at home.
