Welcome to Afriq DataScope — Statistics Explained Visually. This video presents an animated data visualization covering Africa’s Largest Gold-Producing Countries (1990–2025) | Gold Production Race over time. Gold production is the process of extracting gold from the Earth, processing it, and preparing it for use or sale. Main stages of gold production ⛏️ Mining – Gold-bearing rocks or ore are extracted from the ground, either from open-pit or underground mines. 🪨 Crushing and grinding – The ore is broken into smaller pieces to release the gold. ⚗️ Processing – The gold is separated from other minerals using various methods. 🧪 Refining – The extracted gold is purified to produce high-quality gold. 🪙 Final product – Refined gold may be made into bars, coins, jewelry, or used in electronics and other industries. Watch Africa’s gold-production map transform from 1990 to 2025. South Africa starts with a commanding lead, while Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan and other producers rise across the continent. Values show annual mine production in metric tonnes. Historical data for 1990–2024 comes from the British Geological Survey; 2025 values come from the World Gold Council and Metals Focus. Missing BGS observations are displayed as zero only to preserve animation continuity and are documented in the workbook. Data sources and methodology: Metric: Annual mine production of gold, in metric tonnes. Values are production—not reserves, exports, refining, or company output. Country universe: The 15 largest African producers in the World Gold Council’s 2025 country table. The same universe is retained for every year so bars can enter and leave naturally. Historical source: BGS country observations for 1990–2024. Kilograms are divided by 1,000 and rounded to three decimals before display. Missing BGS observations: For a complete Flourish matrix, absent BGS observations are represented as 0. This is an animation placeholder meaning ‘no published BGS figure’, not proof that production was zero. Every affected cell is listed on Data Quality. Country continuity: Zaire observations for 1990–1991 are assigned to DR Congo. BGS ‘Ivory Coast’ is displayed as Côte d’Ivoire. Important seam: The source changes between 2024 and 2025. Treat the final transition as a latest-year update, not a perfectly homogeneous year-on-year comparison. 2025 source: World Gold Council / Metals Focus values as of 31 December 2025. These may differ from government totals because treatment of artisanal and small-scale mining varies.
