4th session of World Weightlifting Championships 1990 (Budapest, Hungary).
In the 67,5kg's category... first north korean overall golg medal in history of weightlifting world championships.
Predistions before competition: "The european champ, Yoto Yotov will be the first" - journalists
"Yotov has the biggest chance for to win. My competitor, Valery Yurov isn't in his best shape, 4th place would be enough for him" - Vasily Alexeev (URS head coach)
In the snatch: North korean Kim Myong-Nam (asian champ of that year) was the leader with 5kg gap. Can maybe Yotov win with a great jerk, like as other bulgarian lifters? For surprise, no. Moreover, the other north korean Li Hi-Bong wins the jerk with his opening attempt (and lower bodyweight), and he didn't make more attempt. So Kim Myong-nam (PRK) becomes the first north korean world champ in weightlifting in the total.
After competition interviews:
Gold medalist - Kim Myong Nam (PRK, 21 yo.):
"I'm satisfied with my total result,, but to be honest, I'd liked to go for snatch world record. I can't make jerk more at the moment, sadly there was to much rest time (5 lifters) between my lifts and it wasn"t too good for my muscles."
Silver medalist - Yoto Yotov (BUL, 21 yo.):
"I'm not satisfied with my results, I can lift much more (157,5 + 190). Sadly, I've got cold in the last weeks and it had consequence for my strength; I was able to jerk only 182,5kg at my last trainings. Today, I jerked 180kg for my 2nd attempt and I didn't have hope for more."
Bronze medalist - Li Hi-Bong (PRK, 28 yo.):
"I'm satisfied with my results and my place. My best c&j was 192,5kg at training, but not in a shape like now. After the Asian Games, I had not to much time to prepare. That's the reason why I didn't try my last two c&j attempt, I wasn't prepare for it, so I had no choice."
