Linville Falls - Plunge Basin & Erwin's View

On this hike, I started off on the Erwin's View Trail (1.7 miles), stopping by the Chimney View Overlook as well. If you keep walking past the Erwin's View access - which will be on your left - you will reach the end of the trail and there's a great view of the gorge there. Next, I hiked back to the visitor center and picked up the trail to the plunge basin (1.7 miles). This was a great trail and a lot of fun to hike! The second half of this trail is a bit on the strenuous side. The Linville Gorge has a rich history. The Cherokee called it Esio (Eseeoh) which means river of cliffs. Although it is widely believed that in 1766 the Linville party was attacked by a group of Cherokee, the most extensive account of the event reports that the attackers were actually a group of Shawnee.
