As the twelfth bell rings, the candle inside one small lantern with a crooked smile turns from gold to silver, and it rises softly from its windowsill. It follows the sound of a tiny bell to an old stone bridge. In the stream below, the reflection of the moon hides another town, with upside-down roofs, streets that run between the stars and a clock tower on a purple cloud. The water parts like a silver curtain, the little lantern floats through, and the whole world turns over. On the main street a band of skeleton musicians leads the way, and behind them a thousand lanterns float in the air: spinning, bobbing on the beat, circling with the dancing spirits. The little lantern joins the parade. In the town square it finds a small, see-through ghost sitting alone, holding a paper lantern that has no light. The little lantern leans close, and a spark of its silver flame jumps across. The paper lantern glows, and the ghost smiles for the first time.
