Episode # 5904 MASK OF VIOLENCE Original airdate: 10-11-59 Loretta Young Stars as a woman helplessly trapped by a masked killer in her New Orleans apartment during Mardi Gras. "Katherine", played by Miss Young, is alone in her quarters overlooking Bourbon Street when a stranger, played by Barry Atwater, leaps onto her balcony from an adjoining building. At first she’s surprised and friendly toward the stranger, until she becomes alarmed by his erratic behavior and learns from a discarded newspaper that he is a dangerous killer on the run. Barry Atwater was a teacher of audio techniques at the UCLA film school when he landed his first acting role in the student film A Time Out of War, a Civil War allegory that won the Oscar as best short film of 1954. He appeared frequently on television from the 1950s into the 1970s, when he would become best-known for his role as Surak in the original Star Trek TV series. Early in his career, Atwater reportedly used steroids heavily to add bulk to his six-foot-one-inch frame. Suffering from terminal cancer, he died from a stroke on May 24, 1978 in Los Angeles, shortly after his 60th birthday. Also in the cast; Windy Winkelman, Maidie Norman and Richard Garland. Richard Garland was no stranger to the Loretta Young Show series. In films he was known for Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), and on television for appearances on Death Valley Days (1952) and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp (1955). In 1952, while working in the play "Dark of the Moon" at the Players' Ring Theatre in Hollywood, he met actress Beverly Garland and in August of that year married her. His career faded as alcoholic problems grew and he died on May 24, 1969 in Los Angeles, California of related medical issues at the untimely age of 41.
