This is a soothing rhythmic breathing practice. 4–6 breathing is a controlled breathing technique involving a 4-second inhalation followed by a 6-second exhalation. The exercise is performed at a comfortable pace for several minutes, without forcing or straining the breath.
The extended exhalation is intended to promote parasympathetic nervous system activity and autonomic regulation, supporting a physiological state associated with relaxation. Focusing on slow, controlled breathing may also reduce respiratory rate, decrease physiological arousal, and increase awareness of breathing patterns.
Regular practice may help reduce perceived stress and anxiety, support emotional regulation, promote relaxation, and improve the ability to manage physiological responses to stress. The technique can be incorporated into daily self-regulation practices or used during periods of increased stress or arousal.
