Today’s story is shared by Nausheen, an Indian woman currently living in Frankfurt, Germany. Born in Delhi, India, she grew up in a household where her father bore the burden of supporting his widowed sister-in-law and her four children following the death of her husband (Nausheen's uncle). Nausheen completed her engineering degree and moved to Germany for higher studies, where she married a Pakistani man named Jabbar. She needed a German passport, and Jabbar was a German national. Jabbar was a smoker; despite his wife's objections, he continued the habit. One day, he suffered a heart attack and required two stents. A doctor subsequently advised him to quit smoking and switch to alcohol instead; Jabbar began drinking. During this time, a son was born to the couple, but alcohol consumption became a source of conflict between husband and wife. Frustrated, Jabbar entered into a second marriage and stopped working, relying on money borrowed from Nausheen to get by. Nausheen eventually discovered his second marriage; when she confronted him about it, he became even more enraged. Excessive drinking eventually led to liver cancer, and he passed away despite medical treatment—alcohol consumption had claimed Jabbar's life. His wife had his body sent back to Pakistan. To this day, the widowed Nausheen remembers her late husband and sends financial support to his family in Pakistan, even though smoking and alcohol were the causes of his death.
