The Ys series remains a masterpiece that continues to this day; however, back when I was in junior high, PCs were expensive luxury items that we didn't have at home, so the very first version I bought was Ys III for the SNES. I believe I picked it up used for around 500 yen. A neighborhood friend had the NES version of *Ys III*, classmates had the SNES and Genesis versions, and a friend's older brother owned the PC Engine version. I think porting PC games to home consoles was a huge trend back then. Even though we couldn't afford PCs, I imagine many people felt a thrill when those games were ported to the consoles we actually owned. Home consoles are high-performance machines these days, but back then, with limited specs, a "100% faithful port" was absolutely impossible. Consequently, ports of other titles or arcade games were essentially "downgraded" versions, yet we were still thoroughly satisfied with them. I had played Ys I and II previously, but I didn't actually buy them until I was in high school and wanted to compare them with the Saturn releases. Later, after I started working, I bought Ys Eternal (I think that was the title?)—the version that came with an Ys OVA—and then Ys II Eternal (or something similar?), which also included an OVA. I believe they’re still at my parents' house somewhere... I also bought the Windows version of The Oath in Felghana after it made the jump to 3D. The PC limited editions were incredibly lavish; they came with numerous CDs, and—though I forget which specific title it was—one even included the SNES version of Ys V (manual included) as a bonus. It just goes to show that no matter how many times it gets ported, I keep coming back to play it. So, here is an overview of *Ys III*, presented in order of release. PC Engine CD-ROM² Version Publisher: Hudson Release Date: March 22, 1991 Personal Assessment: This was actually the first home console port, and the music—utilizing CD audio—is incredibly lavish. However, the hardware lacked native multi-layer scrolling capabilities, so the implementation feels a bit forced. Thanks to the high capacity of the CD-ROM format, they were able to feature voice acting. SNES Version Publisher: Tonkin House Release Date: June 21, 1991 Personal Assessment: Visually stunning, though the music is just average. Given that it features PCM sound capabilities, it’s hard to argue against the criticism that corners were cut. In the Ruins of Ilburns, if you swing your sword upward when the "Fuzzle" enemies appear, you can easily max out your level. The story is short, yet the game allows you to create a large number of save files. NES Version Publisher: Victor Musical Industries Release Date: September 27, 1991 Personal Assessment: This is the same publisher that handled the NES ports of Ys I & II (which included some original elements). They forced a port onto NES hardware, but the controls feel light and responsive. It’s a solid effort if you just want to enjoy the game itself. Mega Drive Version Publisher: Nihon Telenet Release Date: November 1, 1991 Personal Assessment: It was the last version to be released, but it’s my personal favorite. The FM synthesis music still sounds great today—though listening to it after a long time, I find myself wondering, "Was the music always like this?" Is it because I'm playing on a Retro Freak? Or is it just my imagination? It’s likely hard to acquire now, as the price for used copies has gone up. That’s about the gist of it.
