At Chicxulub, an asteroid struck a shallow sea above a thick platform of sulfate-rich rock. The buried crater still records the shock that vaporized part of that target; had the same-sized object struck deep ocean, or missed Earth, the familiar story of extinction might have been very different. This documentary traces that possibility across the ages, from the warm beginnings after the Cretaceous to the Eocene greenhouse and forests near the poles. It follows cooling into the Oligocene, the spread of grasslands, and the changing fortunes of herbivores, ocean life, and birds. Then it considers the questions that become harder to answer: how mammals might have evolved alongside dinosaurs, whether a dinosauroid was ever plausible, and how far evolution could have gone before climate, geography, and chance narrowed the path. The journey continues through the drying Mediterranean, Pliocene change, and Ice Age rhythms, arriving at an Earth whose living inhabitants might be unfamiliar—but whose future cannot be known with certainty. Current science, no doomsday. A quiet listen for a long night. If this quiet journey helped you unwind, subscribing helps our small channel grow.
