We went wild swimming in Llyn y Fan Fawr, a glacial lake beneath Fan Brycheiniog in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), in the first week of March. It was very cold! 🥶
Join us for the walk up the boggy mountainside, the freezing dip, and the warm-up afterwards. If you’ve ever wondered what cold water swimming in the Welsh mountains is really like in early March, this is it.

🧣 What we wore and took
Swimwear, thick gloves and socks, woolly hat, towel, flask of hot choc, lots of good base layers and a good coat.
⚠️ Safety note
Cold water swimming can be dangerous, especially in March when the water is at its coldest. We went in together, kept our swim short, and had warm layers ready. Never swim alone, get out if you feel numb or unwell, and check the weather and conditions before you go. This video isn’t a guide, so make your own risk assessment.
